I suppose it has been a while huh? Not long after my last post, life threw us a curve ball. Just seven months after returning from Iraq, Donnie found out he would be leaving for 6 months in Afghanistan... in 8 days. So obviously we had some emotional and angry few weeks. Clerical goof ups ended up in him being placed on the wrong rotation, and his name got called. After finally starting to come out of the fog of that, my funding program for school through the DoD experienced a temporary halt, so right after finals i had to search high and low for scholarships. Fortunately the program has now been reinstated. Then, 2 weeks ago my cat Salem, who i have had since i was 15, unexpectedly passed away. To say it has been a rough 2010 would be an understatement.

To me Thanksgiving is about enjoying time with friends and family. You all are my scrapping family so I want to share it with you.

To celebrate, I have planned 2 fun events!

Cook your Layout, Cook your Turkey!
When: 8am EST Thursday, November 26th
Well start a thread and chit chat about what we are making, and anything else that comes up.

I will provide a collection of "ingredients" such as quotes, journaling prompts, etc to help you get started on a layout, but feel free to just make anything you desire, or even just come chit chat if you dont have time to scrap.

I will also provide a Speed Scrap During this time. If you dont have time then, feel free to come back and do it later.

Leftover Dinner Scrap
When: 7-8pm EST Thursday, November 26th

After a fun day with family and friends, relax and scrap with us! Speed Scrap Instructions will be provided

What is a Speed Scrap? for approximately 1 hour, scrapping instructions to build a layout are provided every 10-15 minutes. at the end of the scrap, you will have built your own layout, using your own photos and any kit you have in your stash! This can be a great way to just go with the flow and break out of a scrapping rut or just enjoy creating a layout with friends.

I will also be having a Huge sale, bigger than I've ever had before! Plus I'll be releasing a brand new kit, called " Desert Sunrise"

I just love Collabs! I love how they present unique twists on the same colors and theme, to build an amazing kit! And this is definitely an amazing kit! its got 4 templates ( 2 made by me! ) A Ton of papers and elements, 2 alpha's, Quick pages, overlays and well you just have to take a look to see all the great stuff it has! Yesterday, I sat down to make a layout for some of my daughters birthday pictures. We had a Hannah Montana party, and she wore her Hannah Montana costume that weve pieced together for halloween. I didnt have just the right kit, so i built the layout from scratch, creating elements as i went. You can grab the quick page of that layout Here

If you read my newsletter today, i promised to maybe show pictures of the cake. So here goes! I decided to try and be super( stupid) mom, and try and draw hannah montana on my daughters cake. I should mention, ive never done any cake decorating before, ever.

My sketch went pretty well

3 Hours later, i was up to my elbows in colored icing, and cut up ziplock bags because i thought i bought 12 icing bags, not 1 12 " bag, and this is what we had

Fortunately, she atleast loved it. So all was well.

Running a bit behind

I dont think it is exactly a coincidence that on the day my oldest starts kindergarten i find time to sit down and tell you about my new releases. I think her brother and i are both a bit bewildered not having her here to argue with and boss us around.

Custom Drop Shadows

I said no new kits, not no new tutorials! Today was my day for the tutorial thursday at Brownie Scraps, and I wanted to share my tutorial here with you also!

Drop shadows. I sort of love them and hate them. I love them because they can make a page look absolutely fantastic. They truly can make your elements pop off the page. I hate them because they can totally positively ruin what would otherwise be an amazing page. If i notice a drop shadow first on a layout, its way to strong. Drop shadows are meant to add definition to our elements and pages, NOT to be their own element that we notice seperately.

Our CT recently investigated the cause of drop shadows that go out of control when you resize them for posting to galleries, and what they discovered was that if when you resize you do not have " scale styles " on the image size control panel checked, they go crazy on you. Your nice, pretty, behind the element shadows stay just where they were while everything gets smaller! so check that box and you may notice your gallery pages look much better!

While we are on the subject of things you can do to make your pages look better, I am going to share with you another of my thoughts and tips. Then ill get to the tutorial for realistic drop shadows.

-resize properly and proportionately. A general rule is you can size down, but you should NOT size up. Sizing up will often ruin your quality for printing. Sizing down is fine. This is why many designers put their elements larger than they need to be on a page into a kit. If we put every element, the size it should be on a 12x12 page, those people that work on larger projects, or just want something large, would possibly not be able to use half our items cause they would be to small. so giving extra large items that can be sized down, is a precaution. with that said, that doesnt mean take our button and leave it large on your page. when was the last time you saw a real button half a piece of paper big? so make it the size it would actually be, to achieve a realisitic look. to easily resize in photoshop hit Control + T then hold down the shift button while dragging a corner inwards. holding down shift will keep your proportions constrained so nothing gets stretched or distorted. You should use this tip when using the transform tool to resize anything.

Ok, ive rambled enough so how about we move on to that tutorial!

For this tutorial we are going to put a realistic looking drop shadow on a curly bow. First things first, you need to add a normal drop shadow for us to have a drop shadow to manipulate.

The standard drop shadow looks ok, but it doesnt really show how the curls would come up off the page. Just a note on using the drop shadow layer style - moving the distance slider up moves it away from the item more, and the size slider moves the spread/blurryness up you should generally leave the center slider alone for most standard purposes in scrapping. For this one, i boosted the distance slightly from the standard 5px to make it a bit more visible.

In order for us to be able to manipulate our drop shadow, we want it on its own layer so right click on the layer FX button to the right side of your layer on the layers list and chose " create layers " Now select the drop shadow layer, instead of the bow layer. this is the layer we will be editing.

Now hit Control + T to rotate this shadow. Think about where your element would be anchored to the page. I know that when you rotate it, only part of the shadow looks right, thats ok, we will fix that shortly. right now just focus on your anchor point ( or one of them ) for me, it was the center of my bow. and rotate till a part coming out from that anchor looks proper for your light source ( a note on light sources - it is generally a good idea to decide at the start of shadowing where you light will be coming from for your entire layout, as it should remain the same throughout the layout )

Now to fix that shadow that isnt sitting right for our lightsource/anchor point(s). I used my lasso tool to select the rest of the shadow that was not where i wanted it as you can see in the image above.

Keeping that selected i can rotate only that part of the layer, while leaving the non selected area unchanged. So with that selected Control + T again, and rotate and position that selection of shadow, until it looks right. if all of it doesnt look right, repeat this step on each area that you need to change.

Now we need to put the finishing touches on our shadow. Check for any jagged areas that might be sticking out or extra areas that dont need to be shadowed and erase them with a soft edged brush.

The last thing we need to do is lighten it up . Lower your fill and opacity till it looks right. I also recommend that you now select both the bow and the shadow layer and link them together so that you dont accidentally move your shadow that you just worked so hard to place so properly.

This is just one of many ways to achieve realistic and stunning drop shadows. I hope this helps you have another way to consider, and to help you bring your layouts to life. I would love to hear your thoughts, and how you do drop shadows and any shadowing or scrapping tips you would like to share with fellow blog readers and scrappers. the elements and papers in this tutorial will be available in August in a kit to be released called " Not So Tough "

I know i know, Its been far to long since ive posted and updated. No yelling and no throwing things! I havent abandoned you all, or abandoned posting, i promise. Donnie came home from Iraq, and took a month off and so ive been spending time with him.

Then now that hes back at work ive been busy busy busy designing some new stuff for you all! Now thats the good news - ive got 2 brand new kits all done for you. The maybe bad news? you have to wait till August for them. Why August - because its summer, and hot, and your kids are out of school, and pools look way more enticing than computers and beaches or whatever fun things you are occupying yourself with this summer while i hide indoors from the Arizona heat.

But let me tell you, having all this gorgeous product ready for you and not giving it to you yet is hard for me!! So when it comes time to finally release them, we are gonna have a great big party!!
Details will be coming soon, but in the begining of august we are gonna have a great big Pre-Release party, where you can pick up all the kits im releasing in august ( about one a week i hope ) together, before they hit the stores for good. They will be able to be purchased during the 24 hour party, but then will be gone from the store until their respective thursday release dates. Oh and they will also be in a discounted bundle if you want them all so this is a party you do NOT want to miss. And you dont even have to hire a babysitter.

So no new kits till august, I have disapeared, but i promise, it will be worth the wait!

I know I know, its been to long since my last update. But I've been super busy ( ok I'm sorry, enough excuses ). Weve got another designer challenge started up this week over at Brownie Scraps, Plus we selected our new guest CTs ( well be looking for new guests in about 2 months! ) and then of course ive been making some new stuff for you guys.

The most exciting news is, its finally my turn to give away brownie bytes! Leslie and I teamed up for April, and so first thing tomorrow morning, I will be kicking off our fantastic Brothers and sisters kit, with download number 1 !! That will be over at the Brownie Scraps Blog

So its been a crazy few weeks for me. Ive had this cold that just wont go away, and the kids have been sick. And its no fun being on a diet, with no sick food in the house, with everyone in the house sick, and your husband away. Seriously people trust me, not fun. Anyway, because of all this I am way behind on my designing schedule, but today i found time to just sit down and play with some of my fellow Brownie Bakers kits. Oh , and a bit of a blog makeover too! Sometimes ya just want something new to cheer you up.

So pick up some free word art here( just click the preview of the word art to download or click the layouts to view the kits that made them ), and then go buy yourself some new kits after seeing these layouts to show just what you can do with the new kits i treated myself to =).

I really hope you all love this kit as much as I do. But if you don't well, atleast I'm happy with it right? My favorite scene in the book Twilight ( i think they royally screwed up this scene in the movie, so lets not go there ) is when Edward takes her to his meadow, and allows her to truly see him for the first time. To me that was such a magical place and a magical moment. I really do consider Edward sort of Bella's angel, and I think she is his angel as well. So this kit, is about that magic, that amazing beautiful place, where angels sparkle. One of my fantastic CT members, Tiffany named this kit for me, because I just could not come up with exactly the right name for this kit. Speaking of our CT they have done such an amazing job with layouts for this kit, that I am going to give them a post all of their own. They really have outdone themselves. I will show those to you tomorrow.

First, Ive been working on this kit, really since i started designing scrap kits, because this is the reason that i branched out into kits, instead of siggys. I Volunteer with a rescue group here in tucson that takes as many dogs as we can each day, off the kill list at our local shelter, and puts them in our network of foster homes until they can be matched with their forever families.

Now, the ironic thing with this kit finally being ready and being released tonight, is that normally i just volunteer and dont foster, because donnie really isnt on board with the fostering thing. But i found out last night that one of the dogs we saved last week was going to possibly have to go into a boarding kennel until we could find another foster, because her foster mom was 9 months pregnant and having complications. 2 weeks ago this girl was facing death, came into her home so uncertain and had been making great progress, and was about to face a very confusing situation for her. So.... we have a temporary resident at our house. Meet Olive:

To have this be given because someone loves my work so much, is just such a huge compliment, that I am very thankfull for. So last night, Ramona called a designer meeting. And the purpose for this meeting, was to unveil to me what had really been going on ( they are sneaky i tell you! ) They did a collab behind my back for february, to honor myself, and all the other military familys that sit home, waiting for the day we can welcome our loved ones home. I was completely moved to tears. They also all wrote little letters to me, that just made me feel so good, on a day that i was having such a rough day. I love my Brownie Girls dearly.

Ive been reading the P & PT posted to me today, around the various places i visit, and do want to say thank you. They havent gone unnoticed, and they are appreciated.

Im ok. Or i will be. It will just take time. He was very sweet to me as he was leaving, and that helped. Lucas is also still blissfully unaware, and that helps too. Bri is doing good too, i think she also doesnt realize how long he is going to be gone yet. She seems to think hes just away for the day.

Ive finally gotten up the nerve to research his base, and also research the rumors of wi-fi we had been hearing. and from what ive found it looks like wi-fi is there and up and running, i even found one person make a comment that they were able to play wow on it, so that gives me lots of hope that communications will be much better than we had hoped for, and will help this time pass.

Im very tired, and spending lots of time in the bathroom, but i know this is just how my body deals with him leaving, and it was expected. In some ways it is a releif, because i dont have to dread it anymore . its here. now to just get it done with. 122 days and he will hopefully be on his way home. Depending on flights we should have him back the begining of may.

I know he loves me, and the kids. and he knows we love him. I will be hearing from him when he gets to his first airport tonight, and will try and update again soon.

thank you for the understanding, and the well wishes. they do mean a lot to me.

Ugh, sick kids are no fun. Husbands that are forced to make wills prior to going to Iraq, dont tell you about it, and then come home and hand it to you arent the greatest mood improvers either. Atleast completing lots of layouts and getting a new kit completed are good for the mood. I decided to make a little sampler for you out of this kit. Are you excited by that title? I know I am ! We are having a Huge CT call competition. There are no eliminations, no points, just scrapping, and choosing our new CT members. But we would like to get to know you, and this will give you time to get to know us, and get comfortable in our community. And that is important, because we want our CT to be active in the awesome Brownie Scraps Community!

So to enter here is what you need to do, go to this thread, and read all the details and follow the instructions =). We will be looking for general store CTs, as well as CTs that will specialize for each designer. Each designer will be looking for 1-2, so thats 8-16 spots. We will also have few general store CTs, so as you can see, since right now we only have 4 people, that is a big gap to fill! Personally I will be looking for 2 people to specialize as my CT. Ok bear with me this is going to be a huge post, because i have tons of free stuff and important information for you guys.
First things first, I hope everyone has a great wonderful Thanksgiving, full of things that you are Thankful for. How do you like my new look?? *cyber twirl in front of the world wide mirror * - My blog is newly decorated with pieces of my brand new kit, that I did for this weeks designer challenge at Brownie Scraps. Our assignment this week was to do a kit about childhood, and since for me horses were my big thing growing up ( and still today ) i did a kit that i am calling Horse Crazy! You will be able to get it FREE in the store next Friday and running for a week as free, then on sale.

Speaking of next Friday, we have a ton of things planned for you next week at Brownie Scraps on Black Friday. Although I guess that is now technically this week isn't it? Finally a New kit and New Freebie!

I haven't deserted you guys, I promise. It has just been a busy week. I have 2 freebies and a new kit to launch today! Bri was sick this week, and of course to a 5 year old, that means that the world is ending. So she and her brother have kept me running all week waiting on " the little princess " as she has taken to calling herself. She has also really been acting up even before she got sick. But even the doctor commented on how incredibly smart she is, so i really think that part of her behavior issues is related to her being so dang smart, that she just thinks of very creative ways to try things, that she shouldnt do. I think I need to find a way to challenge her brain more, in more constructive ways.

Last night we had Heidi ( the kids sitter ) come over and watch the kids, so we could go see Twilight. It was pretty good. Ive seen all the yucky reviews, and yeah it was funny at times at serious moments cause of the way it was acted, but i sort of think it was supposed to be that way. It was an unbelieveable story, that was almost real. And there was a lot of laughs in the book. It only makes sense that that was translated onto the screen. It should have been longer, so that they could have really gone more in depth to it. Yes, it lost some of the book because we werent reading the thoughts as much, and it was just impossible i think to really translate to the screen, what an amazing thing that series is. But it was a pretty good attempt. And I dont think that a lot of the laughs were so much because of the acting, as it was that we knew what thoughts were behind the moments. I think most people that see it, are people that have read the book, and so we KNOW. We know what they are thinking, and feeling, and trying not to do. So it just somehow leads to laughter seeing those moments played out in front of us.

I think that Rob did a great job as Edward. There were moments where he wasnt what i pictured, but thats probably because the guy i pictured isnt real. You could definitely see some of Midnight Sun in his acting of certain moments. He really took what he learned from that, and played it from that perspective instead of twilights perspective as far as what he showed expression and emotion wise. And I think that will be difficult for some people that havent read midnight sun to understand, because it isnt strict to what they learned in twilight. Anyway, apart from one scene that annoyed me as far as changes go, i loved it!

Anyway, onto the freebies!

I have recently been working on expanding my Commercial Use product line, and I have some great stuff for you guys. I have made a FREE sampler, including 1 piece from each of my CU kits and a bonus, so its 5 pieces! So you basically get to try them all for free! Then if you like them and want more, the kits are all available at Brownie Scraps! I've got some really cool holiday kits for your own layouts, or cards, or holiday kits you are making! I would love to hear what you think of them! Here are some Previews for you.

I have a 10 piece Grab bag for you this month, it will get opened up and revealed next month and will still be available for purchase. This month it is available ( starting tomorrow, ill add a link as soon as it gets loaded into the store ) for $2.50. Once it is revealed in December, the cost will be $5. Still a great price for 10 commercial use items, and I included PSD files to make it easier for you to recolor each layer.

What I am Working on

I first want to say thank you for all the sweet comments on my last post, they have really helped pull me out of my blue mood, and make me not feel so alone.

Secondly, I wanted to update to what I am working on, and thats actually a few things :

First off, we are going to be doing a very special 25 Days of Christmas over at Brownie Scraps. There will be a download for each day, and each days download will have a few goodies for you. They will all be in holiday theme, and with the same color palate, so if you download them all, you will have a HUGE kit for FREE! and these wont just be page items, we are doing gift tags, and all kinds of FUN holiday stuff for you guys. I really hope that you enjoy it as much as we are enjoying making it for you. You will find stuff from all the great Brownie Scraps designers in there, so there will definitely be some good stuff.

Also, I am working on a kit that was inspired by my shower curtain ( yes, its true ) but it will be another soft kit, sort of like Heirloom romance, so I hope you guys like it. I am hoping to get that done by the end of this weekend, but I am not sure.

I got my calendar for 2009 done that i am gonna order for our family, and I am hoping to turn that into 13 quick pages to give away for free as well for you guys. So keep checking back for those also. It will have a little bit from all my kits to give you a nice feel of my stuff. Plus will make for some quick holiday gifts if you are short on time like i am!

Well tomorrow is Veterans Day, and the closer we get to Thanksgiving and Christmas the more I am stressing and worrying about my husband deploying the first week in January. The holidays have sort of been ruined for me this year, I just cant seem to make myself look forward to them.

I decided to make a kit about it, and as a gift, I am putting the word art contained in the kit ( as well as the two elements shown on the word art preview ) available for free. So I finally finished my nice , warm colored, warm feeling, happy, lovey dovey kit. It is definitely romantic. The Irony? Id like to bash my husbands head in with my computer screen this morning. So i've been playing around with my new kit, and then this morning over at Brownie Scraps Eileen posted her challenge to do a layout all in red! It was like an open invitation to play with my new kit ( which you can find over at Brownie Scraps now for FREE! ) I loved my layout I did, but i took it a few steps farther, and made it into a ( not quite all red ) quickpage for you guys!

I promise I haven't deserted you all! I know I havent posted much this week, but I havent had to much to post with our current daily downloads over, but you can still pick up Dream Garden for free over at Brownie Scraps and I do have a brand new ( also free ) kit queued up to be added for free over there also! It should be up in the next day or two, and then I will post a preview here for you. It was inspired by the Twilight Series, so I really hope you all like it.

Our Anniversary was yesterday, and for the most part we had a nice quiet day, atleast as quiet of a day as you can have on election day. After the kids went to bed we had a date in, and it was nice. When the Twilight movie comes out, we are gonna go out and see that to really celebrate.
